Brawl for a Cause evolved from humble beginnings at the University of Georgia, starting out as a charity-boxing match between fraternity guys benefitting HERO for Children. On January 21, 2012, founder, Matt Thomas hosted his first event – Bulldawg Brawl. It sold almost 850 tickets and earned a spot on the front page of the local newspaper.
Almost immediately, people started asking for the next charity boxing event. Before setting a date, Matt put himself into a brawl so he could experience the fighter’s journey. That fight changed Matt’s life and put Brawl for a Cause on its path to progress.
The second event showcased Greek pledges duking it out for their fraternities’ charities. Six months later, a third Brawl featured a female bout – an event that has been a staple ever since. Matt went on to Georgia State Law School, where he submitted the Brawl business model in a competition and placed in the top 10.
Matt put that model into play in 2014. The event included a concert and allowed fighters to choose their own cause. It was an innovative approach to charity boxing that sold out the Georgia Theatre.
In November 2015, the Brawl expanded to Atlanta with Buckhead Brawl. The event raised $40,000 – dwarfing the combined fundraising totals to date.
Spring 2016 sold out UGA’s Hedges on Broad with two college events that showcased exhilarating brawls between University of Florida and University of Georgia. Then in Fall 2016, Brawl for a Cause was granted 501(c)(3) status, only weeks before the second Buckhead Brawl on Thanksgiving Eve, November 23, 2016.
